The Commercial and Corporate Legal Counsel role is based within Commercial Banking (CMB) Commercial and Corporate Team, UK Legal.
The role of the Commercial and Corporate Legal Counsel is to provide legal advice, guidance and primary support to the CMB Business of the UK Bank covering all of the customer segments and where priorities and resourcing require, other areas of the CMB business / legal function within the UK.
Your responsibilities will include:
Providing counsel and legal support in relation to all aspects of English banking and financial services law (including credit and lending) and material regulatory issues that have an impact on the CMB UK business area (including regulated lending in the Business Banking customer segment). Being considered a trusted legal adviser to the CMB UK business by ensuring that commercially sensitive, pragmatic and practical legal support and advice is provided in a cost-effective and efficient manner to the relevant CMB UK business area. Providing support and guidance to the relevant CMB UK business area with regard to legal issues and risks arising in jobholder's area of expertise. Providing prompt, practical, commercial and sometimes complicated and / or specialized legal advice and support to the relevant CMB UK business area. Being proactive in the provision of legal support to and management of legal risks in CMB UK and related Functions. Undertaking proactive stakeholder engagement and legal training to the CMB UK Business. Attending business and governance meetings where required. Maintaining and developing positive and professional working relationships with all team members within the wider UK CMB Legal Team, the UK Legal Team and relevant business stakeholders. Participating effectively as part of the UK CMB Legal Team. Participating in the strategy for coordinating and promoting initiatives to share legal knowledge and best practices with legal colleagues. Assisting in managing the approach to legal risk in the CMB UK business area to ensure that the interests of the HSBC Group are adequately protected. Assisting the business to remain compliant with legal risk management requirements set out in the Group Standards Manual and Legal Functional Instruction Manual. Working closely with Regulatory Compliance and Financial Crime Compliance teams to improve efficiency, collaborate and avoid duplication.
The ideal candidate for this role:
An English law qualified solicitor with at least 2 years PQE. Experience of / exposure to banking transactional work. Familiarity with the various vehicles through which business can be undertaken eg companies, incorporated partnerships, sole traders etc. Familiarity with lending, security and priority arrangement documentation Excellent spoken and written communication skills with experience of adapting your style and approach to the audience and message to be delivered. Ability to build effective networks across business areas, developing relationships based on mutual trust and encouraging others to do the same. Ability to use business knowledge and understanding of client needs to successfully manage and grow client relationships.
The base location for this role is Calthorpe Road, Birmingham.

Entirely new from the ground up, HSBC UK's head office is opening in Birmingham. The location of this role will move to our new state of the art offices at 2 Arena Central during 2018.
